Lesson 2 – Demonstratives – This, That, These and Those.

speakenglish this that these and those

We use ‘this / that / these / those’ to show which things or people we mean when it comes to pointing at something or describing something can be a living or non-living thing, which is either at the close distance to us or at the far distance. We’ll have a couple of examples below for your better understanding and then you’ll also have a few sentences like fill in the blanks and you need to put them right. also remember as we have already learnt about articles in our previous chapter we’ll be using them to make our sentences for meaningful and perfect.

This:

“This” is always used for singular things which are at close distance and are singular too. Just remember whenever you’re talking about anything and that is around you, in front of you at close distance. You will use “this” for that thing.

for e.g:

  1. This is a pen.
  2. This is a motivational speech.
  3. This is an apple.

That:

“That” is always used for singular things but for things which are at a far distance and are singular too. In this case, you need to remember whenever you’re talking about anything and that is far from you, you will use “that” for that thing.

for e.g:

  1. That is a car.
  2. That is a shop.
  3. That is an elephant.

These:

“These” is always used for plural/multiple things which are at a close distance. Just remember whenever you’re talking about anything and those are multiple things and are near you, you will use “these” for them.

for e.g:

  1. These are keys.
  2. These are my books.
  3. These are my toys.

Those:

“Those” is always used for plural/multiple things which are at a far distance from you means away from you. Just remember whenever you’re talking about anything and those are multiple things and are away from you, you will use “those” for them.

for e.g:

  1. Those are knives.
  2. These are our bags.
  3. These are tanks.

Here’s a quick tip:

there can be some words on which the “these” and “those” don’t apply like there can be a few things we always remain singular for example: milk

Milk can never be plural so we can never say these milks or those milks.
